For me, it is very satisfying to transfer my thoughts onto paper!
I have been journaling since my twenties. Back then, I called it a diary. Now it’s a journal. So fancy, right? (smile)

For anyone new to journaling, let me list some of the benefits:
- Emotional and mental healing
- Documentation of what the Holy Spirit is speaking to you
- Documentation of your conversations with God – Prayer Journal
- Documentation of inspirational scriptures/positive quotes to refer to at any time
- Stress relief
- Personal motivation
- Goal setting
- Documentation of testimonies
And you can have more than ONE journal. I have several.
Another reason I enjoy journaling is to leave something for my kids to enjoy in the future. It is a way to share my life with future generations. The way I write is the way I talk. When people read my book, I’ve been told they can hear my voice.
When I read my previous journals, I can reflect on my life and see how God has truly blessed us. Situations that were painful are behind us now. Praise God!
Types of Journals
I have a Worship Journal I use when listening to or watching sermons. I document the scriptures and the topics.
I also have a Daily Journal that is used to document my day: the ups and downs, business or ministry ideas, etc. I also use different color tabs to draw attention to certain pages. I recommend this journal: https://amzn.to/3XjC6lK (*paid link)
Devotional journals are AWESOME! I own one that has a Bible verse and reflection on one page and the next page is blank so I can write my own thoughts and prayers. This type of devotional helps as a guide on what I should journal. I will write one soon myself. I recommend this one: https://amzn.to/4glBzIQ (*paid link)
How Do I Get Started?
To get started, all you need is:
– a notebook or journal
– a pen
I wouldn’t recommend using a pencil because your writing may quickly fade over time.

You can buy a blank journal and decorate the cover if you want. Since I have been doing this for a while, I now like to find pretty journals with smooth paper. Seriously, the paper makes a difference!
You can start with a small journal first. Or if you know you have a lot to document in your journal, get one with lots of pages. Or get two journals.
I prefer a journal that has a spiral wire binding. I prefer not to use one hand to hold my journal open while I write with the other. Didn’t I mention I have been doing this for a VERY long time? (smile)
Now onto the writing instruments. Ok don’t judge me (laughing), but I enjoy pens and have a LOT of them! When it comes to choosing the correct writing instrument, I like a pen that glides across the page as I journal. I also write with different color inks. Sometimes, I write my words in one color then write scriptures in another color.
Of course, it’s your choice what type of writing instrument you use.

Where Should I Journal?
Journaling is best when done in your comfort area in a comfortable position. Keep a small journal with you to capture great ideas or thoughts that may appear at any time. The Holy Spirit may speak to you at any time, so I keep a journal on my nightstand.
When to journal? I prefer journaling in the early morning hours and before bedtime when it’s quiet. Some people have the amazing gift of being able to tune out their surroundings and journal at any time.
Write your feelings – If you don’t want others to read your journal, keep it in a secure place under lock and key. If your family values your privacy, that’s wonderful! You can keep your journal on your nightstand or in your personal space.
I really enjoy my lap desk! I have one that is big and comfortable. A lap desk allows me to sit and journal just about anywhere! My husband also has a lap desk since we do most of our writing in our living room. Check out this lap desk: https://amzn.to/4e7JW8K (*paid link)
How Much Should I Write During One Setting?
That is totally up to you. You may think of a topic and just write a few lines. You may be meditating, and the Holy Spirit may give you ideas or solutions to problems you prayed about. Before you know it, the words start flowing and you may end up writing pages of your feelings, ideas and goals. Just let it FLOW! Journaling has helped me over the years during the good times and the bad. I would love to hear your thoughts about journaling. Feel free to share in the comment section.
